Adventures_C2

Our famed Kindermusik Adventures summer program, session I,  started this week – but you can still enroll for this session and session II!

A little about Kindermusik Adventures:

In just five lessons, we’ll give you a summer’s worth of music, stories, and activities created to inspire a lifetime of learning. In a Kindermusik summer camp, you and your child will play, learn, sing, dance, create, and share in the fun of making music together. A trusted Kindermusik educator is your guide through each research-proven and giggle-approved activity.

Inspire your child’s love of learning in our delightfully engaging summer sessions. Best of all, every one of our summer camp activities—the music, stories, and crafts—is specially designed to nurture your child’s natural curiosity, eventually drawing her toward learning new words, new concepts, and new big ideas.

Kindermusik Summer Schedule:

Session I – May 25th – June 26th

Session II – July 13th – August 13th

Kindermusik classes meet once a week for 5 weeks, each class is 45 minutes long.

Session I Themes:

Peek-A-Boo! I Love You!—newborn to 1.5 years
More than just a curious story, Mother Goose games like peek-a-boo help  babies understand language. In this special camp, uncover more ways to say “I love you” using American Sign Language, soap bubbles, and parent-baby dances. Plus, parents can meet with other newborns and families in the community and learn how music improves the child development process.
Home Materials: Peek-A-Boo! I Love You! board book, Home CD, duck wash mitt, baby duck Gertie ball, and poster.

Creatures at the Ocean—1.5 years to 3 years
Sing sailor songs and make the ocean count. “Five little seashells lying on the shore: Swish! Went the waves and then there were four.”
Home Materials: Home CD, pair of seashell castanet instrument, a set of 10  story cards and 5 picture folders

On the Road—3 years to 5 years
Re-live your childhood, with your child. Every song is likely to revive a
memory from your summers’ past. Play “Eye Spy” and find shapes in the clouds to pass the time. Take imaginary trips in a bus named “Van Go” to fun-filled vacation destinations such as the carnival, a summer cottage, and the beach.
Home Materials: On the Road book, Home CD, frog guiro instrument, and poster.

Session II Themes:
Busy Days—newborn to 1.5 years
Set your baby’s day to classical music. With a little more Tchaikovsky in your “Twinkle, Twinkle” repertoire discover new ways baby benefits from the classics as you develop an appreciation for the world’s most respected music. Each lesson features new activities and songs that the parent can using for all the places baby and mom go together—the store, the playground, the doctor, and more.
Home Materials: Busy Day board book, Home CD, Village cage bell instrument, and poster

Zoo Train!—1.5 years to 3 years old
Toddlers and trains make a natural match—always on the move. Tag along this summer with a traveling zoo train. Bring your own stuffed animals for the petting zoo. Wear long white socks on your hands for polar bear paws and learn about real animals in the zoo. Sing songs for clapping time, and use music to help toddlers regulate emotions.
Home Materials: Zoo Train book, Home CD, animal shaker instrument, and poster.

2nd & 3rd Year Academy Students Present “Once, In The Time Of Trolls”

Newsflash!  Our 2nd and 3rd year Academy acting students are presenting their end-of-semester play, “Once, In The Time of Trolls.”  This is a wonderful chance to visit and get a better idea of what the Academy is all about.  The show is at the main campus of the AAC (308 Merrimon Ave) this Thursday & Friday nights (May 28 & 29, 2009) at 7 PM and admission is free!

More information on the show:

By Sandra Fenichel Asher. Based on Norwegian folktales.

“Happily ever after” takes on new meaning as Katrina goes in search of her Prince, held captive by an evil Troll Princess in a dreary castle east of the sun and west of the moon. Katrina’s journey brings her to the homes of three wise women who share hilarious stories, complete with marriage-minded mares and a nose three ells long, of how they have found contentment by “doing what pleases others,” “doing what pleases me,” or “doing nothing at all.” With their guidance and a boost from the Four Winds, Katrina defeats the Troll Princess and rescues the Prince. The adventure concludes with a surprising promise guaranteed to please audiences of all ages.

More information on the Academy at the Asheville Arts Center:

OVERVIEW

THE ACADEMY AT THE ASHEVILLE ARTS CENTER is a year-round, progressive conservatory for students with the commitment and desire to deepen their performing arts education in acting, singing and dance.  August 2009 marks the beginning of the Academy’s fourth year.  Current Academy students have earned lead roles in many community and school productions, paid voice-overs, and film projects.  Two concentrations of study are offered: the Musical Theatre Concentration and the Drama/ Acting Concentration.

Students in grades 4 – 12 (ages 10-18) are eligible and may be admitted by audition after submitting an application.  Younger students may qualify for our Junior Acting Company, a pre-Academy program for those 10 years old and younger.

The Academy’s “acting company” conservatory approach allows students and instructors to build a supportive, exciting, boundless learning group.  Together they’ll explore the tools and styles of performing on stage, film and TV.  Academy students are the core of our Children’s Theatre Workshop and annual Academy productions.

BENEFITS

Once accepted into The Academy, students receive many benefits including:

  • Acquiring strong performance skills in an individualized, comprehensive program and supportive atmosphere.
  • Performing in regional and national festivals, productions and auditions.
  • Preparing career tools like audition repertoire, resumes, headshots and career marketing strategy.
  • Training with faculty of professionals, plus inspiring guest artists.
  • Gaining a head start in preparing for future education, like high school, NC School of the Arts and college programs.
  • Earning and receiving an Academy certificate of accomplishment.
  • Saving with the Academy tuition pricing plus discounts on additional workshops, classes, music lessons, even headshots.
  • First consideration for roles in our Children’s Theatre Workshop productions.

CLASSES & CURRICULUM

At the core of the Academy Curriculum are the Academy Technique and Acting Company classes.  The Academy Technique Class introduces and teaches acting skills and techniques. The Acting Company Class teaches students to apply these techniques in scene study and performances.  The Acting Company represents the Arts Center, performing in festivals and competitions.

Each semester, the Academy Curriculum may include required classes, elective classes, performances and special workshops.  The attached Class & Curriculum page outlines the basic class schedule for the first two semesters.  Each students’ progress and goals are assessed regularly under the guidance of the Academy faculty.  Future specialty classes are offered, according to students’ progress and revised goals.  From the second year forward, students perform in an annual Academy production, in addition to Children’s Theatre Workshop productions.

The Musical Theatre Concentration teaches skills in acting, singing and dance.

The Drama/ Acting Concentration teaches acting for the stage and camera, including character development, voice, movement and behind-the-scenes process.

WHAT WE DO…

The Asheville Arts Center offers age appropriate experiences in the arts for learners of all skill levels in a respectful, safe, and non-competitive environment.  We meet each student at his or her own level and gently encourage them artistically, socially, and emotionally.  We offer high-quality instruction and educational experiences because we are committed to the art of teaching and creating art.  It is our hope to build art and awareness in the community and provide a “home” for families to pursue their dreams.

WHERE WE ARE…

We have three locations currently.  Our main location is in a restored church building at 308 Merrimon Avenue near downtown Asheville.  Our North location is on Merrimon Avenue underneath the Atlanta Bread Company.  We also have a South location just off Hendersonville Road, 2 blocks north of the Long Shoals intersection.

WE TEACH…

Children ages newborn to 18 in our Creative Arts Preschool, Kindermusik, Dance (Irish, Ballet, Tap & Jazz), Drama classes and productions, Rock U and individual music lessons.  We also offer classes for adults in dance, acting, music and exercise classes.  An average of 600 students (ages 3to 18) take our 70 arts classes a week in addition to our 35 preschool students.
