THE ACADEMY AT THE ASHEVILLE ARTS CENTER is a year-round, pre-professional conservatory for students with the commitment and desire to deepen their performing arts education in acting, singing and dance.

Students ages 7 – 18 are eligible and may be admitted by audition after submitting an application.

The Academy’s “acting company” conservatory approach allows students and instructors to build a supportive, exciting, boundless learning group. Together they’ll explore the tools and styles of performing on stage, film and TV.

The Academy and Jr. Company are also the recipients of the prestigious and nationally recognized Broadway Junior Spirit Award from the annual Junior Theater Festival hosted by iTheatrics and Musical Theatre International. They were also honored with multiple acting achievement awards and directing awards.

Current Academy students have earned lead roles in many community and school productions, paid voice-overs, and film projects. The Academy works hard to help graduating students who wish to continue their studies prepare University auditions or find professional theater company internships. Three of our graduating seniors, this year, have received full scholarships to continue their study in college.

Auditions will be held on Saturday, July 17th at the Asheville Arts Center (308 Merrimon Ave.). Individual auditions will begin at 9:00am and last until 10:45am. Auditions will be scheduled in 15 minute increments. Auditionees must call the Asheville Arts Center at 253-4000 to schedule an audition time.

At 11am the students will learn a short dance piece as a group. From 11:30am to 12:00pm all those auditioning will do the dance portion of the audition. All those auditioning should be prepared to come for their audition time and STAY until 12:00pm. While their child is auditioning, parents will take part in an information session about The Academy.

The Asheville Arts Center has made the audition process that much easier for potential Academy students by providing a selection of poems, monologues, and songs for auditions. Auditionees are limited to using these provided materials.

Each student age 7-11 should prepare one of the provided Shel Silverstein poems, and one of the songs. The poem and song must be MEMORIZED. Click here for links to download the poem of your choice in PDF format.

Each student age 12-18 should prepare one of the monologues and one of the songs. The monologue and song must be MEMORIZED. Click here for links to download the poem of your choice in PDF format.

Each student will have 15 minutes to perform their monologue and song, work with the Drama Department Director on some improvisations, and do a “range check” with the Music Director.

Academy students can also look forward to representing The Academy at the Junior Theater Festival in Atlanta in January and a Spring Break Trip to Walt Disney World in April.

For more detailed information on the specifics of what students can expect to learn year to year, please contact our Drama Department Director, Ann Mahoney Kadar by calling the Arts Center at 253-4000.
