Mary Katherine Smith


Mary Katherine Smith has been singing and dancing since the age of 3. She was very fortunate to receive a strong pre-professional training from Marilyn Cloutier, and Shelia Sumpter, along with many other accomplished instructors. She began assisting classes at the age of 13 and was teaching and choreographing around her hometown of Waynesville by the age of 16.

Since then, she has studied modern dance with the Henny Jurriëns Stichting in The Netherlands, and music, drama, and various styles of dance at the Pineapple Performing Arts School and Studio in London, England. She has appeared in numerous productions over the past two decades. Favorite roles include Anita in WEST SIDE STORY, and Shelley in BAT BOY THE MUSICAL for HART, and, most recently Tiger Lily in PETER PAN THE MUSICAL at ACT. She danced in the award winning “Whenever I Hear the Name Bill, I Taste Burnt Onions” in the Asheville Contemporary Dance Theater’s 48 Hour Dance Project in 2009. She was a featured dancer, singer, and comedic actress for a season at Ghost Town in the Sky.

She has choreographed several area productions including MISS JULIE at AB Tech, THE WHO’S TOMMY for Eblen Productions and Asheville Arts Center, PETER PAN THE MUSICAL for ACT, and THE SONGS CABARET for Asheville Arts Center. Mary Katherine has also worked extensively as a guest artist at Ira B. Jones Elementary School, where she choreographed productions of SUESSICAL THE MUSICAL and WILLIE WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY as well as productions of YOU’RE A GOOD MAN CHARLIE BROWN for MusicWorks! Studio of the Performing Arts and THE NUTCRACKER BALLET for the Dance Center of WNC. For the Asheville Arts Center, Mary Katherine has served as the choreographer for the recent Children’s Theatre Workshop productions of GREASE and FIDDLER ON THE ROOF.
